Fresh produce and herbs. About Us I started growing fresh produce on a larger scale in spring of 2014. Prior to that, my husband and I gardened in our back yard for over 30 years and still do today. I grow my own transplants from organic seed and use only natural fertilizers or pest control if necessary. I use organic compost in my garden as needed. I served on the founding Board of the Iowa Food Cooperative. We have been Consumer members since the beginning of the Iowa Food Cooperative. I am a nutritionist (Registered Dietitian) by profession and I have been interested in food and health since high school (which is a long time ago….). The importance of knowing where and how food is grown has become even more relevant to our family in the past 15 years. So, in 2013, I rented a Community Garden space in West Des Moines to see how it would be to garden away from my home space. Then in 2014, I made the decision to scale up my garden size and sell to area restaurants and other outlets such as the Iowa Food Coop. In my other part time work, I became more familiar with the local food system and steps to take to rent land for growing food from the City of Des Moines (since we have already used all possible space for gardening at our home.) My first growing season went well, and I sold to HOQ Restaurant in the East Village as well as to the Local Food Box program. The name “Garden on Garden” is based on the location of my growing space at the intersection of Garden Road and SW 23rd Street in Des Moines.
