Although my environment has changed many times, a love for gardening has been a constant in my life. In Africa, I grew many different crops, some of my favorites being cassava, corn, bananas and peanuts. Now that I am in the Iowa, I am growing produce that is proven to grow well here, while experimenting with some of my favorite plants and varieties from Africa. I love to grow a wide selection of types and varieties of produce - enjoy! In 2013, I began farming with several other families from Bhutan, Burma, Burundi and Rwanda at Lutheran Services in Iowa’s Global Greens Farm. Global Greens provides three to five years of land use, marketing assistance and farming advice to farmers as we move toward becoming independent business owners. In 2017, I moved off of Global Greens Farm and began renting land in Altoona, Iowa for my own farm while still working with LSI to further develop my business here in the Des Moines area. Practices (our standards for raising or making our products) Our produce is Certified Naturally Grown. We use only organic, OMRI certified insecticides, and these are used sparingly to maintain high levels of beneficial insects. We use no sprays to control disease, relying instead on a high level of soil health and fertility to reduce disease and maintain healthy plants. The soil is managed effectively through the use of cover crops, compost, and additions of composted manure. Weeds are managed primarily by hand pulling and hoeing. We use weed fabric for a select few crops, and will use small machines to help us with weed management as well. |
