Small Potatoes Farm produces a wide range of fresh, organic vegetables. In the offseason, the farm has storage crops, wood and trees for sale.|
Small Potatoes Farm is owned and managed by Rick and Stacy Hartmann. Rick began marketing exclusively to chefs and specialty groceries in Ames and Des Moines in 2001. Stacy joined him in 2004. Together they purchased an old farmstead in 2004 and Small Potatoes Farm was born. They have been improving it ever since.
Our ten acres has about three in certified (IDALS)organic vegetable production at any one time. Our NW corner includes a couple acres of mature maples and our north and east border has just been planted to prairie.
Small Potatoes has a reputation for offering some of the freshest and best quality local vegetables available. Our production centers around working directly with families and individuals though our 100 member CSA. But, we are working hard to make available offerings to others through the Iowa Food Cooperative when we are able.
Directly serving central Iowans with fresh, organic food from our farm has been very rewarding to us. Thank you for supporting our local food system and ensuring a bright future for Iowans who love healthy, fresh, seasonal food.

Practices (our standards for raising or making our products)
Our farming operation will be entering its 6th year as certified organic. Our certifier has been the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) for all years. Our management is predominately human-scale on less than four cultivated acres.
We spend considerable time and effort to conserve soil and water resources, improve habitat for wildlife and beneficial insects, and use extensive cover cropping for soil and fertility improvement.
Small Potatoes Mission Statement
Small Potatoes Farm is an intensively managed, certified organic, human-scale farm, focused on raising the highest quality, best-tasting vegetables in central Iowa. Our varieties are chosen with an eye toward taste and quality.
We sell to individuals and households directly as possible, primarily through our CSA. Besides being certified organic by a federally recognized certifying agency, we are always striving for additional environmentally sustainable practices.
We believe our success is based on equitable relationships with those who eat our food.
