Wabi Sabi Farm grows Certified Organic (IDALS) produce and plant starts and is the evolution of the original Turtle Farm CSA started by Angela Tedesco 15 years ago. Wabi Sabi Farm owner/operator Ben Saunders managed Turtle Farm from 2010-2012 and begun working at the Farm in 2005. With the retirement of Turtle Farm's owner Angela Tedesco from active farmer to adventuresome retired farmer, Ben Saunders (TF Farm Manager 2010-2012) starts his own farming adventure, Wabi Sabi Farm on the healthy land of Turtle Farm.

Practices (our standards for raising or making our products)
Wabi Sabi Farm is Certified Organic by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS). No genetically modified crops are grown and no synthetic chemicals are used. We plant cover crops on fallow ground for soil health, but will also amend this with compost on crop ground. For information on IDALS Organic Standards click here.
We are fortunate to be able to irrigate from a deep well to supplement Nature's rains. To conserve water we use trickle irrigation to focus the water on the crop rows and not between rows. In dry years we are able to irrigate to keep the plants alive, but it is Nature's rain that makes crops produce at their best.
While being Certified Organic by a third party (IDALS), we also strive to grow with a cooperative attitude toward Nature and encourage wildlife on the farm. We place an emphasis on using more physical controls (bird-netting, re-usable weed fabric, row covers, using Surround WSP) than organically approved herbicides and pesticides (although we do use the pesticides sparingly if needed) as a way to increase our beneficial insect populations and native ecosystems. There are 5 acres of ground on the farm that has not been cultivated for the last 8 years and sparingly mowed as a sanctuary for our ground nesting bird populations and other wildlife.
We revere authenticity above all else! Because of this respect for authenticity, our mission is to grow tasty, nutritious, Certified Organic (IDALS) fruits, vegetables, herbs and garden transplants available to all members of the community in the most environmentally, physically and economically sustainable way.
