Fruits, vegetables, eggs About Us Started in 2013 on our family's century farm in Elkhart (NE Polk county), New Family Farm aims to connect people with food. Three generations and four households are involved in our farm operations, which are significantly more than a hobby but provide far less than full time income. Browse through our Products for Sale Ingredients N/A Practices (our standards for raising or making our products) We primarily use manure to provide nutrients for our plants, and emphasize healthy soil. If we need to use any sprays for pest control, we only (and sparingly) use organic-approved pesticides. Please inquire if you would like specifics or to discuss growing practices. We also have approximately 250 laying hens, which we feed a non-GMO mix in addition to vegetable scraps. Our older flock of hens have constant access to more than 20 acres of cattle pasture where they can find all kinds of good, natural things that chickens like to eat. With our new flock (spring 2019), we are rotationally grazing them in an "eggmobile" that we move each day to a new area for grazing -- hopefully this is helping to improve soil fertility in a more directed way while allowing the ladies plenty of fresh grass and bugs to keep them very happy. Additional Information We want to connect people with food, and by doing so increase awareness of broader ecological and social challenges in the world. In 2017, we started partnering with Prudent Produce to deliver organic foods to homes around central Iowa. This has changed our operation a bit away from the CSA model that we started with in 2014, providing better access to what our customers want to eat: local when possible, regional then national then global when necessary, but always grown with health in mind. |
