Practices (our standards for raising or making our products)
We utilize a wide variety of grass species in our operation. During the grazing season our cattle are rotated daily to fresh paddocks ranging in size from 1 to 4 acres. Our grasses/legumes consist of orchard grass, perenial rye grass, bluegrass, big bluestem, sorghum/sudan, meadow fescue, red/white clover and alfalfa.
Since the only marketable product being grown and eventually leaving our farm is beef we are able to be highly sustainable. Outside fertilizer inputs as mentioned earlier are the only introduced aspects. No genetically modified technologies are utilized. Organic matter continues to improve due to manure distribution and plant residue turnover. A strong earthworm population compliments this cycle.
