My family and I have called Des Moines our home since 2007. Before Des Moines, we lived in Burundi and Tanzania. There, we had a large garden where we grew carrots, tomatoes, peppers, onions, amaranth and more for home consumption and to sell to others in our community. I now grow crops at Global Greens Farm, and I look forward to selling more produce to my new American community. There are currently 26 families of farmers from Bhutan, Burma, Burundi and Rwanda farming at Lutheran Services in Iowa’s Global Greens Farm. Global Greens Farm is a four acre incubator farm located in West Des Moines, and all produce grown there is Certified Naturally Grown. Global Greens provides individuals who immigrated as refugees the opportunity to reconnect to the land through farming. The program provides three to five years of land use, marketing assistance and farming advice to the farmers on their way to becoming independent business owners. Etiene is in his first year of the Global Greens program.

Practices (our standards for raising or making our products)
All produce is Certified Naturally Grown. Global Greens Farm represents a fusion of modern technology with old world farming practices (aka lots of human power). Aside from the initial tilling of the land in April, all farming is done by hand.
