Prior to living in the United States, we lived in Burundi, Congo and Tanzania. We have gardened our entire lives and even sold produce while we were in the refugee camp. Palm oil, cassava, corn, bananas and beans were common crops our family grew and sold in Africa, and we are excited to continue to farm in Iowa. Our whole family works together on the farm and our farm name, Jipatie Afya, means that the produce we grow can bring health to people. We love being able to share this healthy food with other families! There are currently 25 families of farmers from Bhutan, Burma, Burundi and Rwanda farming at Lutheran Services in Iowa’s Global Greens Farm. Global Greens Farm is a four acre incubator farm located in West Des Moines, and all produce grown there is Certified Naturally Grown. Global Greens provides individuals who immigrated as refugees the opportunity to reconnect to the land through farming. The program provides three to five years of land use, marketing assistance and farming advice to the farmers on their way to becoming independent business owners. Jacqueline and her husband Mukiza are in their second year of the Global Greens program.
