Antibiotic-free, fed non-GMO feed with no-hormones-added beef,lamb & poultry About Us Our family has been farming in the Ankeny area since 1862. Our farm was designated a Century Farm in 2002. Griffieon Family Farm was recognized in 2017 with the Iowa Farm Environmental Leader Award presented by the Governor, IDALS and the DNR. My husband, Craig, farms conventionally. In 1996 our son, Nick, started raising pastured chickens. That project has grown into a family business that markets antibiotic-free, no-hormone-added meats,soaps, lotions and other farm products. Our four kids have all graduated from college with ag degrees and all four live within a half mile of where they grew up. Nick and Phil farm with us. Autumn is married and has a five year old daughter and a two year old daughter who stay with Grandma and Grandpa on the farm each day. Autumn has the flock of Katahdin sheep and makes soaps & lotions for us to sell. Nick is planting his fourth crop of corn and soybeans after five years of working on a farm near Dike as an agronomist. Phil has been farming with us for a few years and enjoys working with cattle. Julia has an off-farm job. We sell our products from our farm on the north side of the Ankeny city limits, at the Ankeny Farmers Market and through the Iowa Food Co-op. Browse through our Products for Sale Practices (our standards for raising or making our products) Our Limousin beef calves are born on our farm, raised on pasture paddocks until they are weaned and then are fed in a pen near our silos for about 9 months. They are fed non-GMO corn silage mixed with cracked corn, soybean meal and minerals. We grind and mix our own feed on the farm and the grain is non-GMO. Our Katahdin lamb is 100% grass fed. Chickens and turkeys are raised on pasture and fed non-GMO feed that we grind ourselves from grain we grow. Our pigs are fed non-GMO grain, are antibiotic-free. We are currently out of pork. Additional Information Our daughter, Autumn, makes a variety of soaps from the animal fat. She also makes lotions. Aunt Lorraine loves to sew and stitch, so replenish those kitchen towels you got for your bridal shower or those pot holders that Grandma gave you that have worn thin with some new ones! Highlights this Month We just got pork and lamb in this week. I am out of most chicken parts, but still have plenty of whole an cut-up chickens. If you read on, you learn how hard it is to bring you farm-fresh poultry. If you can't find something you want on the IFC listings, call me and i is possible we have some left that was butchered on the farm. If the 2020 has proven anything it is that Iowa's food system is broken. Local lockers are swamped with folks trying to procure healthy Iowa grown meats. I was lucky to have secured a locker date every month until the end of 2021 shortly before meat sales were limited in grocery stores in March. We will have beef monthly and pork in the fall. Poultry processing in central Iowa needs a complete overhaul--there is only one facility in the state (an official state-inspected plant) with the necessary Iowa stamp on the label, and it is a 2 hour drive from our farm. Lawmakers need to address their strict policies on local processors and the lack of actual facilities to fulfill those requirements they place on the producers and the lockers. Bring this up with your Iowa legislator. The rules/laws need to be changed so you can enjoy locally produced poultry so you know about the diet, the processing and the farm it came from. |

I like to make shredded beef taco meat by dredging the roast in an envelope of dry taco seasoning, using an InstaPot sauté in a Tablespoon olive oil on all sides, add 1 cup of broth or water, seal lid vent off and cook 60 minutes on pressure cook. Vent naturally, remove from pot and pull apart with a fork. Ad some of the juice to increase flavor and moisture. Use for any Mexican dish. This is great to warm up as leftovers for a taco salad or freeze for use later. I’m usually feeding an army, so there isn’t much left. Our Limousin beef is antibiotic-free with no-added hormones. It is fed non-GMO corn and silage. No bones in this roast, but it comes from the rear leg of the cow, a frequently used muscle, so the meat is lean but tough. Cook it low and slow in a crock pot or use the Insta-Pot. I use a spice rub, sear on two sides, slice an onion add a cup of water and program the INsta Pot to Meat/Stew for 2 hours for a 5# roast. Shred the beef and add a cup of BBQ sauce to the juices for shredded BBQ Pot Roast. Delicious make ahead meal. Ask me for the recipe.
