About Us Good Shepherd Grass Farms is run by Jake and Amber Wheeler of Monroe, IA, along with their 4 children who all have important jobs on the farm. Wyatt and Tucker take care of the free-range laying hens – from gathering eggs and cleaning their coop to keeping them safe from critters. Bailey helps Amber move the cows to a fresh piece of grass every day and helps Jake move the pasture-raised broilers. This fall they will raise their first batch of Thanksgiving turkeys. Laying hens are completely free-range in spring, summer, and fall and fed small amounts of grain in the winter months. Practices (our standards for raising or making our products) All of our livestock are raised without any growth hormones or antibiotics. They never receive any chemical wormer. All of them are raised outside in the sunshine. Our cattle are moved daily to new pastures ensuring the highest quality forage possible and allowing manure and parasites to be left behind. They do not return to these pastures until they have been fully rested. Our poultry follow the cattle similar to flocks of birds following the herds of buffalo on the American Prairie. This allows them access to fresh new shoots of fresh in addition to fly larvae and other insects the cattle leave behind. This process mimics nature by recycling nutrients naturally and allows different species to benefit from each other. By managing the ground this way there is no need for any chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides to be used. Our poultry is fed non-GMO feed. Additional Information There is increased nutritional value in our foods. In order for your food to be nutritional there must be good nutrients in the soil it is raised on. There is no exposure to, or ingestion of harmful ingredients, additives, and chemicals. Highlights this Month We are in full broiler (chicken) production! We are on our second batch of 500 birds this spring. Our cattle are moving daily to new grass. We are processing calves now and throughout the summer. We are working on increasing our egg production by purchasing laying hens and baby chicks. |
