Owned and operated by Jordan Scheibel, Middle Way Farm started in the fall of 2012. 2021 is our 9th growing season. We are a transitioning to organic operation specializing in high quality vegetables for local sale through weekly online website orders with home delivery option, our weekly Community Supported Agriculture shares (Grinnell, Newton) which runs from June through October, buying clubs and consumer coops (Grinnell Farm to Table in Grinnell, Iowa Food Coop in Des Moines), restaurants (Relish in Grinnell, Lemon Tree Teahouse and Restaurant in Newton), and grocery stores (McNally's in Grinnell). Middle Way Farm is embedded within the larger Lacina family farm, which has been in the family for 4 generations and was once the home of Midwest Tofu, an organic soybean processing company. Joe and Laurel Tuggle Lacina have joined the farm operation as partners in 2021! We are members of Practical Farmers of Iowa, the Iowa Farmers Union, and the National Young Farmer Coalition. Browse through our Products for Sale Ingredients N/A Practices (our standards for raising or making our products) We are a transitioning to organic farm, meaning that we follow all regulations for certified organic agriculture but have not yet obtained certification. We do not use synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, genetically modified seed, or sewage sludge. Any products used on the farm must be OMRI approved. Although it is allowed under organic rules, we also do not use manure from confined animal feeding operations. We produce our own transplants on the farm with organically approved soil mix. We also purchase certified organic potato seed and sweet potato slips. The basis of our soil fertility is a mix of cover crops, purchased certified organic compost, and other organi soil amendments. We control pests and diseases through crop rotation, planting resistant varieties, physical barriers such as row covers and mulches, micro-nutrient sprays that improve plant health and resistance, and as a last resort, targeted organic pesticides that break down quickly in sunlight and are sprayed at times to minimize impact on non-target species. Long term we are also improving the native habitat on the farm and working to integrate plants that host beneficial insects into the production field, with the goal of increasing natural predators and reducing pest populations to tolerable levels without using organic pesticides. Highlights this Month With expanded production and a reliable delivery partner, we will be offering products through IFC throughout the 2021 season! Despite a cold and dry (up till now) spring, the fields are looking great right now, if a little behind in growth. We've had excellent weed control and have been getting (most) crops planted in a timely manner. We are really working this year on fully utilizing our production area, only leaving a small portion in full season cover crop fallow. We just planted tomatoes in the high tunnel and are growing more than ever! I hope to offer them through IFC depending on local (Grinnell/Newton) demand starting in mid-late July, including deals on bulk tomatoes! We also have more potatoes than ever planted and although some of them got hit pretty hard by the late frost the week of May 10, I think we will have a large crop this year. We've struggled with leaf hoppers on our potatoes in the past. They usually show up in May or June (after the first cutting of hay) and are very small mobile pest, which makes them almost impossible to control with organic pesticides. Within a few weeks, the potato foliage is mostly destroyed by "hopper burn". This year we are experimenting with planting potatoes into a metalicized silver plastic mulch, which has reflective properties that are supposed to confuse and deter small pests like leaf hoppers. |

Garlic Scapes
3 3 bunches available. Order number of 3 bunches.
The edible flower stalk of hardneck garlic plants that appears in mid-June - highly seasonal! The stalks are removed to allow the garlic to put its energy into the bulb prior to harvest. Has a wonderful mild garlic flavor; can be consumed raw or used as a substitute for bulb garlic. Makes excellent pesto. Bunch includes 8 plus stems, each roughly equivalent to one bulb of garlic in the kitchen. Scapes keep very well in a sealed plastic bag in the fridge. I usually use them all through June & July!
