My name is Tika Bhandari and my homeland is Bhutan, which neighbors China and India and is located in the Himalayan Mountains. I grew up on my family's 18 acre farm where we grew a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and livestock. We traveled frequently to India where we sold ginger, oranges, and livestock. I fled to a refugee camp in Nepal due to violence and was resettled to Des Moines in 2009 and am now a farmer with Global Greens Farm. With my many years of farming and sales, I understand the importance of growing and selling high quality produce to a community with a vast variety of tastes.
There are currently 25 families of farmers from Bhutan, Burma, Burundi and Rwanda farming at Lutheran Services in Iowa’s Global Greens Farm. Global Greens Farm is a four acre incubator farm located in West Des Moines, and all produce grown there is Certified Naturally Grown. Global Greens provides individuals who immigrated as refugees the opportunity to reconnect to the land through farming. The program provides three to five years of land use, marketing assistance and farming advice to the farmers on their way to becoming independent business owners. Narad and his family are in their second year of the Global Greens program.
