We like to think of ourselves as Farmerteurs, or Farmer-Entrepreneurs. About 15 years ago, we gave up our Chicagoland chemistry jobs to do the crazy and near impossible: Thrive on a 100-acre family farm. Today we are the proud owners of Pickle Creek Herbs, a state-certified commercial kitchen, and Green Heritage Farms, a small certified organic herb farm in Southeast Iowa. We grow herbs, berries, tomatoes, and garlic that we then use to create herb-infused olive oils and vinegars, soaps, salves, and lip balms. We take the process from seed to store and make everything ourselves using original recipes perfected over the years. And yes! You can taste the difference! On our Web site you’ll read that our mission is to show how amazing herbs can be when they’re grown by passionate farmers who love their plants, their community, and their soil. We also have another, kind of save-the-world mission: To demonstrate how the small sustainable farm can thrive in today’s modern industrial world. We intend to do this through care and respect for the land, the community, and the consumer, and we hope this shines through in everything we do. After all, in the end we are no more than what we have given to others. Passion for life and respect for the land that sustains it: Above all, that’s what we hope to give. Practices (our standards for raising or making our products) Our farm (Green Heritage Farms) is USDA Certified Organic (IDALS Organic Producer #: CAH449TJE). We are former chemists who are really into soil chemistry and who believe in learning from nature. Our goal is always to create the ideal growing environment for our plants--get the chemistry right and the biology will follow. Life starts with the soil! Additional Information Taste is not a commodity! Our mission is to remind people how good food can taste when it is grown in well-loved and well-tended ground. We are the fourth generation to be working the soil on our 100-acre spread. We feel privileged and proud to be members of that group known as the "small, sustainable family farmers." |

Mint Seedling, Mojito variety
1 4 x 4 inch pot available. Order number of 4 x 4 inch pots.
Cuba’s famed mojito cocktail, once a daily favorite of Ernest Hemingway, is made with rum, sugar, lime juice, and Cuba’s unique mojito mint. While recipes call for any available variety of spearmint, the real mojito can be made with only the true mojito mint. This mint was once impossible to get in North America, but thanks to Toronto mojito enthusiast Catherine Nasmith, who visited Cuba in 2006, we now have the authentic plant. It is clearly different from spearmint--it's scent and flavor are agreeably mild and warm, not pungent or overly sweet like spearmint. In a typically Cuban understated way, it's warm embrace lingers until you realize you want more. Like all mints it is easy to grow and will happily provide more than enough fresh sprigs for your mojitos. Salud!

Mint Seedling, Spearmint variety
7 4 x 4 inch pots available. Order number of 4 x 4 inch pots.
An indispensable culinary herb, spearmint brings the best of mint’s cooling, cleansing flavors to any dish. Spearmint is the most popular mint in Greek cooking, appearing in cheese dishes, lamb, tomatoes, and rice. It also appears in many other world cuisines. A few leaves added to the tea pot sweetens and refreshes tea. The word "mint" derives from the Greek legend of a nymph named mintha who inspired the jealousy of a goddess and was transformed to a lowly plant with an exquisite scent, while "spear" derives from the plant’s pointed leaves.
