We grow over 40 types (200+varieties) of USDA Certified Organic fruit, vegetable, herbs, microgreens and plant starts. About Us Wabi Sabi Farm is a USDA Certified Organic (IDALS) 20 acre farm located in Granger, Iowa. Besides offering our bounty through the Iowa Food Cooperative we also have a vibrant CSA program, provide produce to many of your favorite Des Moines restaurants, have an on-farm stand and participate in a couple of Farmers' Markets. Along with being Certified Organic, we are extremely local (for most) as the farm is located approximately only 20 miles from Downtown Des Moines. 2016 will mark the 4th year of operation for Wabi Sabi Farm but the 10th year that WSF farmer Ben has grown on this land as a Turtle Farm crew member/farm manager before Angela (TF land owner) decided to retire from Active farming and rent the ground to Ben. Besides being Certified Organic, we also value growing in the most cooperative way with nature as possible! There are around 3 acres of ground that is not being cultivated to provide habitat for our many ground nesting birds during nesting time, habitat for our diverse snake populations (of which 2 or 3 species are endangered/threatened in Iowa) and our other feathered/furry/scaly/etc. community members. Not only are we proud to be able to provide a refugee on the farm, but by having all the diversity at the farm these "refugees" help us out with all different sorts of pest control! Trickle/drip irrigation is used almost solely at the farm (the biggest exception is to water in newly seeded cover crop fields if needed) to help conserve our water. Instead of using black plastic (which is thrown away every year)for weed control, we've chosen to use reusable landscaping/weed fabric with some of our pieces being over 10 years old. No genetically modified crops are grown and no synthetic chemicals are used. We plant cover crops on fallow ground for soil health, but will also amend this with compost on crop ground. For information on IDALS Organic Standards check out their website at: http://www.iowaagriculture.gov/AgDiversification/producersPage.asp. Additional Information To learn more about the farm check out our main website at www.wabisabi-farm.com or our Facebook page. We also have a great resource page (www.wabisabi-farm.net) with a recipe database (organized by veggie) and a place to view all of our old CSA newsletters among many other things! Highlights this Month We have finished construction on one of our new high tunnels (30x96) and starting to work on the second one of the same size. |
