raw wildflower honey; creamed honey (no flavors added); various beeswax products including candles & filtered beeswax; propolis products About Us We are beekeepers in the Beaverdale neighborhood of Des Moines, Iowa caring for around 150-200 hives (depending on the year or the season) in & around Polk County including Madison, Warren, & Dallas Counties. We sell our pure raw unfiltered honey, unflavored creamed honey, handmade beeswax items, and propolis tincture. Everything we produce is harvested from our own hives: honey, beeswax, & propolis. *In late January 2021 we will begin to incorporate another Iowa beekeeper's beeswax into our products. The beeswax we harvest from our own hives has always been enough to keep up with demand until our subsequent harvest, but we experienced such wonderful support in 2020 that we began to run low on our own wax in December of that year. We have purchased high quality 100% beeswax from beekeeping friends in Dallas County & will render it for use in our beeswax offerings. When we harvest in the fall of 2021, we will once again only use beeswax from our own hives. We are grateful to support another local beekeeper & thank our customers for such great sales! Browse through our Products for Sale Ingredients We offer our 100% raw unfiltered wildflower honey and filtered beeswax and propolis from our hives. *See the note about our beeswax in the ABOUT US section.* Practices (our standards for raising or making our products) We care for our hives in & around Des Moines & operate our small family business out of our home in Beaverdale. Our honey is pure, raw wildflower honey, a blend of honey the bees produced as they foraged on the various blooms available throughout the seasons of the year. We usually harvest in September each year & coarse-filter the honey. It is as straight-from-the-hive as possible! Our handmade beeswax products are 100% natural beeswax rendered from our own hives. We render the wax cappings collected during honey harvest by giving them 3 water baths to remove debris as well as some of the embedded honey & pollen. This results in a clean wax that is suitable for use in cosmetics & candlemaking, yet it retains the beneficial properties of natural beeswax. We then fine filter the wax a minimum of one more time. *See the note about our beeswax in the ABOUT US section.* The propolis we use in our tincture is harvested from our own hives using plastic propolis traps. The traps provide a way to harvest clean propolis (rather than scraping propolis from equipment such as the wooden hive boxes & frames). After collecting the propolis, we carefully sort out & filter by hand any physical impurities. Additional Information What is raw wildflower honey? * unheated * unprocessed * unpasteurized Our pure, raw wildflower honey is as close to honey straight from the hive as possible. Our honey is extracted, run through a coarse filter, & bottled for you! The bees forage on a mix of wildflowers that come into bloom at different times over the seasons, so our resulting honey has a taste, flavor, & aroma that is a blend of the variety of flower species growing near the hives; these attributes will vary from extraction to extraction within a year as well as from year to year. Why use 100% beeswax candles? * all natural * beautiful color * subtle, honey-like scent * slow- & clean-burning * burns brightly, providing more light than other candles * dripless & smokeless (in a draft-free environment) * cleans the air as it burns (it emits negative ions, capturing & neutralizing dust, odors, mold, bacteria, other toxins) * non-toxic, non-hazardous, non-carcinogenic Highlights this Month Spring 2021 Hello! NEW PRODUCTS: We have added a propolis tincture made with an Iowa vodka to join our tincture made with a regional organic vodka. Thank you to our IFC customers for requesting this! We have added raw propolis (harvested from our hives) for those wishing to use it as an ingredient in their own creations. Also by customer request, we have added a 12-oz plastic tub of our creamed honey. Thank you for supporting local Iowa producers especially during these difficult times! We are glad we can continue to provide you with our products & so appreciate the IFC for giving us an outlet with which to do so. We finished extracting for the 2020 season in August. We are grateful to have a yield of about 10,000 pounds, so we expect to have plenty of honey for you throughout 2021. Our raw honey is a blend of what our bees foraged on throughout the seasons of 2020. If you are purchasing our raw honey to give as a gift, consider purchasing it closer to the occasion as it could begin to crystallize before you are ready to present it. We often can purchase particular size honey jars & types of candle molds due to customers requesting certain ones, so please know we are very receptive to suggestions! THANK YOU for bringing our glass honey jars (don't worry about the lids) back to the IFC; we can sanitize them for reuse. We greatly appreciate the efforts & your friendliness toward the environment. If you'd like to leave your name and IFC member number with what you bring back for us, we will include you in our regular drawings to receive a free jar of our honey--a small way for us to thank you! We package our candles carefully to protect them from dust & dings & also so they make a nice presentation whether going home to you or to someone you are giving them as a gift to. However, if you wish to forgo fancier packaging, just leave us a comment when you order. We can package them simply & safely while saving on paper or plastic. A selection of our honey, candles, & other beeswax products are on the shelves at the IFC at the Franklin Plaza, so you can get a hands-on look at some of our products there when you stop by to pick up your order. If you ever need anything in a larger quantity than is listed on the IFC website, you are welcome to contact us. With enough notice, larger orders can certainly be accommodated. That is true, too, if you are interested in a certain size of honey container or shape of candle that is not currently listed--we are always happy to consider special orders. Thank you for your interest! --Andy, Catherine, and Harlan |

It is the little sister in style to our 6 lb plastic jug. The lid has an inner foam liner as a safety seal. The jug is not dishwasher-safe but is microwavable. (It is not recommended to microwave honey, however.) |

Propolis is a sticky, microbially active resinous substance produced by plants to protect their leaf or flower buds during development & is also secreted around plant wounds for protection from bacteria & fungi.
Honey bees gather propolis from trees & plants & use it to seal cracks & crevices in the hives. The propolis protects the hive from bacteria & fungi similar to how it protects the plants. We use propolis traps on our hives to harvest clean propolis. After collecting the propolis, we carefully sort out & filter by hand any physical impurities. It is raw & unprocessed in any other way. It is best to keep propolis in the refrigerator or freezer as it becomes very sticky & unworkable when at room temperature or warmer. If you need it in powder form, use a dedicated mortar & pestle or coffee grinder as propolis is very sticky & can stain. Among a variety of valuable attributes, propolis is thought to be anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, & anti-inflammatory. It has a long history as a healer: for thousand of years, it has been used as an antiseptic, an anesthetic, & a wound-healer, among many other things. Raw propolis can be used as an ingredient in your homemade treatments: added to lotions, creams, & salves, it has restorative capabilities for the skin. It has been used for minor cuts, acne, minor burns, dermatitis, & scars. Use it with the ingredients you prefer to create your own tincture. A one ounce portion is enough to make 4-5 fluid ounces of tincture if following the common recipe for propolis tincture made with food grade grain alcohol. Some ingest propolis tincture as a dietary supplement to help boost the immune system & to ward off illnesses, allergies, skin issues, joint pain, & more. Some take the tincture internally by daily adding a few drops (approximately 5-15 drops or a fraction of a teaspoon) to water, tea, juice, or a spoon of honey. Propolis tincture is also thought to help with oral care including cold sores, inflamed tonsils, toothaches, sore throats, & dental plaque. In our home, we most commonly use it topically to ward off dry hands from harsh winter weather or long days in the garden. Long a folk remedy, to date no government-regulated agency has accepted propolis as an approved method for the treatment or prevention of any condition. Raw propolis has not been evaluated by the FDA, & we cannot claim to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Enjoy working with this wonderfully scented, natural, and amazing product provided by our bees! The photo represents one ounce of raw propolis. |
