Middle Way Farm is a 2 acre market garden located just north of Grinnell, Iowa. Owned and operated by Jordan Scheibel, Middle Way Farm started in the fall of 2012 and is in the midst of its fifth growing season in 2017. We are a transitioning to organic operation (certification anticipated in fall 2017) specializing in high quality vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers for local sale through the Grinnell farmers market, weekly Community Supported Agriculture shares (Grinnell, Ames, Newton, and Marshalltown), buying clubs (Farm to Folk in Ames, Grinnell Local Food Source), consumer coops (Iowa Food Coop), and restaurants (Relish in Grinnell). Middle Way Farm is imbedded within the larger Lacina family farm, which has been in the family for 4 generations and was once the home of Midwest Tofu, an organic soybean processing company. We are members of Practical Farmers of Iowa, the Iowa Farmers Union, and the National Young Farmer Coalition.

Practices (our standards for raising or making our products)
We are a transitioning to organic farm, with certification anticipated in fall 2017. We do not use synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, genetically modified seed, or sewage sludge. Any products used on the farm must be OMRI approved. Although it is allowed under organic rules, we also do not use manure from confined animal feeding operations. We produce our own transplants on the farm with organically approved soil mix except for a few transplants that we buy from a certified organic operation. We also purchased certified organic potato seed and sweet potato slips.
Highlights this Month
Spring broccoli harvest is at its peak and we've started pulling our garlic crop. Its available fresh (not dried for storage), a special locally grown treat. We still have lettuces grown under shade cloth, which keeps them tender and non-bitter even during the summer heat!
