NFG is nestled in and supported by our neighborhood. Our gardens are spread throughout our community's yards. Located northwest of the metro in Des Moines, Iowa. Our goal is to grow, distribute, give away and sell incredibly healthy and nutritious produce. Creating a more sustainable relationship between people and their sources of food is our top priority!
Phil Hemesath is the farmer and founder of NFG. He began at Iowa State University in the college of business. He finished with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, with philosophy and religion being big areas of study. After college he went on to work with adjudicated teens as a youth counselor. Then to help mitigate credit losses for a major bank. In 2013 Phil attended Cal-Earth Institute of Earth Art and Architecture and was introduced to Permaculture and other techniques of organic and sustainable living. He then went on to receive training in Emergency Medical Services at Stonehearth Learning Opportunities in New Hampshire as a Wilderness - EMT. And later at Des Moines Area Community College as a Paramedic student. Today he is devoted to the development and growth of Neighborhood Farming Group and can be found around Des Moines' farmers markets and the Beaverdale Neighborhood.

Practices (our standards for raising or making our products)
We strive to be simple. Big expensive machinery isn't necessary. All of our produce is grown and harvested by hand using simple yet effective techniques and tools.
When the circumstances allow, we utilize passive techniques in preparing and maintaining our beds and crops. We employ different methods to ensure weeds aren't a problem and our soil is healthy. Often times letting nature do the work. Staying away from chemicals is a big priority!
Neighborhood Farming Group is a non profit 501(c)3 tax exempt organization.
