The Jeremiah Coñejo Farm has been in the family for close to a hundred years. It is approximately 80 acres and located in south central Iowa and was once home to pigs, beef cattle, dairy cows, some chickens, and hayfields. At present there are no animals and the farm is primarily devoted to growing alfalfa hay, but there is also a very large (and ever expanding) garden as well as burgeoning orchard/berry patch.

I would like to think I try to keep things as simple as possible in the garden. All of the garden beds were dug by hand and framed with repurposed wood to make raised beds with walking paths. I start all transplants in my basement and do all the planting by hand. I do not use any chemical fertilizer or pesticides/herbicides in the garden beds, but rather, amend the soil with compost, mulch heavily, and grow native plants to attract beneficial insects. I would consider myself to be an artisanal gardner in that I grow a small enough number of plants to give them individual care and attention, while still producing a surplus of produce to sell.
