Having found that in Des Moines, we would love to share our fresh produce with you. Our journey started in Burundi where we had farmed our entire lives. To escape war, we left our homeland and travelled east to the Democratic Republic of Congo, then fled back west to Tanzania where we were granted refugee status and immigrated to the United States in 2008. We now grow a wide variety of vegetables at Global Greens Farm—some of which you will be familiar with, while others will be unique to Burundi. We take pride in farming as a way of life and hope you enjoy a taste of Burundi when you purchase our produce! There are currently 25 families of farmers from Bhutan, Burma, Burundi and Rwanda farming at Lutheran Services in Iowa’s Global Greens Farm. Global Greens Farm is a four acre incubator farm located in West Des Moines, and all produce grown there is Certified Naturally Grown. Global Greens provides individuals who immigrated as refugees the opportunity to reconnect to the land through farming. The program provides three to five years of land use, marketing assistance and farming advice to the farmers on their way to becoming independent business owners. Mariselina and Simon are in their second year of the Global Greens program. Global Greens Farm represents a fusion of modern technology with old world farming practices (aka lots of human power). Aside from the initial tilling of the land in April, all farming is done by hand. |
