Crazy Cow Creamery is a new IFC producer from Buffalo Center (way up next to Minnesota). The joined at the end of the last cycle and listed seven kinds of cheddar cheese. Welcome aboard, Bruce and Stacie!
7 Pines Farm has started making three types of compound butter (butter mixed with seasonings to add flavor): Sun-Dried Tomato, Honey Cinnamon, and Garlic. They also make three kinds of cheese logs (cream cheese mixed with seasoning and formed into a log for easy slicing): Bacon Onion, Garlic Herb, and Veggie. Lee’s Greens added potted sweet basil and parsley (curled and plain-leaf). They’ve only listed swiss chard at the moment, but they’ll probably add other greens later in the ordering period. Part of the issue is this (darn) cold weather, but they are also beginning to convert their greenhouses to other crops – tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, summer squash, head lettuces, cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli. They are hoping for tomatoes by May. Can hardly wait. Broadhorn Farm took last cycle off (new grandson!), but they are back with these sales on grass-fed beef products from their Belted Galloway herd: 1) ribeye steaks (was $15.98/lb, now $12.99/lb); 2) round steak (was $8.89/lb, now $7.69/lb); and 3) a “Super Supper Sale” that includes 3 roasts, 3 rounds steaks, 3 short ribs, 3 crosscut shanks, and 6 minute steaks (approximately 25 lbs @ $6/lb – a great value). Audubon County Family Farms is back as well. They’ve listed quarter, half, and whole beef from their Registered Lowline Black Angus beef herd. Their smaller size make them “more suited to modern American families, your freezers, your healthier eating habits, and your pocketbooks”. These will be direct sales between you and the producer, but it’s an excellent way to stock up on beef for the summer. You’ll want to call soon (712-563-3044) to make arrangements. Yoke S Ranch has their Corriente stew meat on sale this cycle for $5/lb. |

A year ago Des Moines native Tony Neal asked us if he could join and list salmon from his Alaska-based Popsie Fish Company. His request was denied. When Tony approached us again early this month, the board voted to grant a one-year variance to our Iowa-only product standard. The decision was based on four reasons:
1. Tony is a Des Moines native and his small business produces very high quality salmon products using sustainable practices, In a few months we’ll ask for feedback on our decision to allow a product from outside Iowa to be sold. In the meantime, please give his products a try. He currently has four listed. Shallots Anyone? The board recently discussed ways to make products in short supply available to IFC members. One idea is for the IFC to purchase for re-sale items that are 1) not available, 2) desirable in terms of attributes, such as certified organic, and 3) produced by small farms or businesses. We’ve made our first such purchase: certified organic shallots from Small Family CSA Farm (a 21-acre certified organic farm in SW WI). These shallots will be listed until the supply we purchased is gone. Other new or updated items: Sweet Treat without Wheat added Pumpkin Donuts with citrus glaze, and their donuts now come in half-dozen packs. Grimm Family Farm added beets from last fall’s harvest that they’ve been storing in their walk-in cooler. Huber Family Farm added inventory to their Red Lasoda potatoes (the carrots, unfortunately, are all gone). Sunrise added dwarf-gray pea shoots (in 4.5″ pots) and live green garlic (10 plants/pot).
Special K Ranch lowered the price on their Grass-fed Texas Longhorn hamburger to $4.50 per pound. From Matt at Holdeman ABF Poultry: “I hope the new year finds everyone well and healthy. We’ve been working on some new products that are now listed: whole smoked capon, whole smoked capon breasts, and boneless skinless breast sliced into deli meat. I have a limited number to start with, so hurry and get your orders in.” Daily Bread Bakery added a medium salsa that is “handmade in small batches and loaded with fresh organic and local produce.” Griffieon Family Farm added two new products: un-rendered lard and suet. LaVon also notes that “it is soup and stew season, so we’ve reduced the price on boiling beef.” They’ve also reduced the price on t-bone steaks and dog bones. Wagner Enterprises added two new items: Black Raspberry Crisp and Apple Crisp (both in 8″x8″ and 4″ pie sizes). Fieldstone Farms added an the option of customizing their lip balm set gift baskets (perfect for a Valentine gift for your special “honey”).customized.two new items: corn polenta and buckwheat flour. Broadhorn Farm added beef liver and beef soup bones from their Belted Galloway herd. |

Sweet Treat without Wheat is a new IFC producer from right here in Des Moines that specializes in gluten-free products. They’ve listed three types of cookies, a “cheesecake in a jar” product, and their incredibly delicious Cinnamon Sugar Donuts.
Iowa Choice Harvest LLC is also a new IFC producer specializing in flash-frozen fruits and vegetables processed at their new plant in Marshalltown. They’ve listed two sizes of frozen sweet corn (grown by IFC producer Griffieon Family Farm!) and frozen sliced apples. We are so happy to have these products available to our members. From Bryan at Iowa Orchard LLC: “Due to the heavy crop of apples this season (we’ll probably have them available until June), we are giving away sample bags of 4 apples (all different varieties) to everyone that orders ANYTHING. Thanks!” Special K Ranch has a promotion as well: buy 10 lbs of their grass-fed Texas Longhorn hamburger and get one thrown in for free. Holdeman ABF Poultry added two new products: Capon Brats and Capon Ring Bologna with Swiss Cheese. Nice! From Erich at Iowa Pet Adoptions: “After this cycle we’ll be increasing our prices, so this is your last chance to buy them at $4.75 per 14 oz bag. Also, we are busier than ever with other products, so we may not be selling each cycle. Thanks, and we hope you and your pets are well.” Huber Family Farm added a limited quantity of parsnips and Lee’s Greens LLC has lettuce, spinach, and red kale listed.

The Iowa Food Cooperative now has attractive, 100% cotton t-shirts available. The front has our name while the back includes the “I Love it When You Talk Dirt to Me” graphic developed IFC member Rick Von Holdt.
Grimm Family Farm (from North English) has joined as a new producer member (welcome aboard!). They’ve listed black turtle beans (soak overnight and cook for 30-45 minutes until tender; great in soups, salads, spreads or by themselves as a side dish). Fieldstone Farms added Beeswax Christmas Ornaments and two sizes of several kinds of natural lotions (Oakmoss & Warm Amber, Ocean Mist, French Vanilla). They also have their honey, beeswax, bee pollen, and lip balms products, plus two sizes of gift baskets (which include lip balm, honey, hand & body lotion, creamed honey, and bee pollen). Lisa from Gardner’s Harvest changed her Chocolate Crinkles so they are grain-free. Her reusable glass straws (made of pyrex with flamed ends for a durable smooth drinking straw) are back in stock. And for a substantive treat (that’ll keep folks alive for long periods of time) try her Chocolate Chip Breakfast Cookie. It was a good apple year, so Iowa Orchard lowered prices on their ciders and apples. They also added several varieties: Fuji, Ida Red, Chietain, and #2 Honeycrisps. With the apples listed by The Berry Patch, we’ve got 24 different products listed (apple pie, anyone?). The IFC is blessed to have several great greenhouse producers (how cold is it?). This cycle Lee’s Greens listed lettuce, red kale, spinach, and radishes and Krieger Greenhouses listed four kinds of herb gardens (wonderful gifts for wintertime culinary needs) as well as lettuce, kale, swiss chard, and white turnips.
Zaza’s Pasta continues to amaze with new seasonal foods, such as 1) Panettone bread (sweet, airy Italian Christmas bread full of fresh orange zest, raisins, golden raisins, and currants that have been soaked in orange liqueur) and 2) Christmas Lasagne (with seasonal coloring made by layering handmade noodles with cream white sauce, fontina cheese, balsamic-roasted organic grape tomatoes, and organic spinach). Pumpkin Fettuccine is also on sale and Pizzelle cookies are back in two flavors (Traditional Anise and Chocolate Hazelnut). And don’t forget about your center-of-the-plate needs. We’ve got a huge variety of specialty meats from our livestock growers that have products that you can build a proper feast around. |
