From Country View Dairy: “We’ve relisted our 12 packs and 4 packs of Raspberry Original Yogurt as we are now back in stock.”

From Lee’s Greens: “We have lowered our sweet potato prices and we have a good selection of salad greens. Get them before they’re gone.”

The Pet Bistro added free samples of their natural, whole-food dog food blends, a perfect chance to give them a try!

Clarion Sage Farm lowered the price on their garlic because of some green sprouting. Sprouted garlic is actually a living ‘super food’ with higher antioxidant levels than unsprouted garlic. Jenn writes: “Between the enhanced flavor and boosted nutritional value, maybe you’ll become a sprouted garlic convert!”

Country Roads Produce listed carrots from their high tunnel for a crisp sweet winter crop. They’ve also listed Swiss Chard, bunching onions, and two kinds of turnips.

Sunrise added pots of live herbs (Lime Basil, Red Opal Basil, Red Veined Sorrel) plus Pea Shoots and Radish Microgreens.

Yoke S Ranch has a sale ($6/lb) on their minute steaks from their Correinte beef herd.

Great River Maple lowered prices on their 8 oz Grade A Robust syrup (from $10.95 to $8.95) and their 32 oz Grade A Robust syrup (from $28.95 to $24.95). These darker syrups have richer full maple flavors because they come from later in the season.

Meadow Blazingstar Honey added a Pine Cone Fire Starter product, which are pine cones with beeswax-dipped cotton wicks dipped multiple times in their beeswax.

6 Reasons to Eat Local in 2017

2017 is finally here! At Iowa Food Cooperative, we feel strongly there’s one resolution we should all commit to keeping: Eating local. Luckily, eating local is a great resolution to keep because it supports so many of things we want in our lives. Things like being healthier, being part of a community, and trying new things. Here are six reasons why you should eat local in 2017.

1. Healthier, fresher food. Most of us start the new year with a goal of being healthier. We start going to the gym more, eat more salad and fewer chips, and pull out that yoga mat that was collecting dust in the corner of our living room. One way to stay on track with your healthy eating goals is to buy more fresh, local produce. You’ll find the food is more flavorful and lasts longer, which makes eating healthier more joyful. It tastes fresher because it is fresher. The salad mix you ordered was picked the day before you picked it up and traveled fifty miles instead of 1,500 miles.

2. Try something new! Maybe you said you’d try something new every week or every day in 2016. Maybe you have a Pinterest board full of bucket list items. If you’re adventurous you’ll love eating local and you’ll really love shopping at IFC. Our producers are always adding unique items like aronia berry brats, cardoon, and lard. Challenge yourself by ordering something you’ve never tried during every cycle. Maybe you’ll find a new favorite food!

3. A greater connection with your environment. By eating local food you’ll automatically learn about when foods are in season. You’ll find meals that represent winter to you, like hearty soups with lots of root vegetables, and meals that represent summer to you, like sweet corn and BLT’s. You will know that goats produce milk after they give birth, that you can eat the beet greens as well as the roots, and if you pay attention to what your local farmers are sharing on Facebook you might learn about farming too. Maybe you’ll start growing a few things yourself… or maybe you’ll decide to leave that to the professionals.

4. Become part of something bigger than yourself. When you eat local you do so much more than “just” eat local. At IFC we’ve seen our members and producers become friends who exchange holiday cards and congratulate each other on weddings and babies. At our annual meeting each year our members and producers sit together to share food and talk about the challenges and triumphs of farming, the environment, health, and the meaning of life. Okay, maybe not the meaning of life, but we wouldn’t put it past our members. By eating local you’re supporting a different kind of community that cares for each other.

5. Support Iowa’s economy. You love shopping in the East Village, bought your bike from the Des Moines Bike Collective, and prefer local restaurants to chains. You’re proud to be from Iowa and have the Iowa Native or Transplant sticker on your bumper to prove it. According to the 3/50 Project, for every $100 you spend locally $68 of that comes back to your community in the way of taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. When you shop at a national chain, only $43 comes back. And shifting just 5% of your out-of-area spending to support local produces and businesses would have a $1 billion impact on Greater Des Moines.

6. Local food preserves Iowa farmland and makes Iowa a more beautiful place to live. If you’ve ever visited one of our producer’s farms, or any diversified farm, you know they are beautiful places. Imagine if the drive across Iowa had more diversified farms raising vegetables, meat, dairy, and flowers, for miles and miles. It would be magical, but those farms and barns won’t be there for future generations if we don’t support them today.

The Pet Bistro (Des Moines) is a new IFC producer selling natural, minimally-processed pet foods made from locally-sourced ingredients. They’ve started with a dog treat that has oat flour and oat meal from Early Morning Harvest, peanut butter from Butter Me Up!, and sorghum molasses from Maasdam Sorghum Mills.

Jeremiah Coñejo Farm (Des Moines) came on board in July. Their 80-acre south-central Iowa farm has been in the family for close to 100 years. New this cycle are Waltham butternut squash (an heirloom variety) and Table Queen acorn squash.

Autumn’s Garden (Des Moines) is another new IFC producer who also came on board in July. This cycle they’ve added acorn squash and two eggplant products to go along with their tomatoes, peppers, okra, and basil.

Berry Patch Farm (Nevada) added Honeycrisp apples, which Dean says is “everybody’s favorite; keep in your fridge and they’ll last for months and still be crisp (if you can wait that long)”.

SalAmander Farms (Bondurant) added four kinds of onions, hot peppers, and a heirloom tomato product.

From Ryan with Wild Rose Pastures (Van Meter): “We have updated our products with a restock of beef and the addition of hot dogs, beef sticks, and summer sausage.”

Wilted Leaf Farm (Cambridge) added Kennebec and “Magic Molly” blue potatoes – blue skin, blue flesh with (Jason says) an awesome taste. 

From Melanie with Country Roads Produce (Moravia): “We listed snack peppers, onions, jalapenos, red and yellow tomatoes. We are uncertain of how things may ripen, so our inventory numbers are lower, but we’ll add more as we see how things grow.”

Harvest Moon Farms (Saint Charles) added beets and carrots to go along with their aronia berries and aronia berry products

From LaVon with Griffieon Family Farm (Ankeny): “We added pasture-raised (but supplemented with non-GMO feed) antibiotic-free chicken in packages of thighs, drumsticks, backs, wings, and bone-in and boneless breasts. This is a trial run to see if we can sell all the parts (and not just the breasts).”

Our Global Greens growers (refugee farmers from around the world) continue to add new products. Bucumi Simon added butternut and acorn squash, Ta Kaw Paw added prisma shallots, and Eating Well Farm added Desiree potatoes.

Wilted Leaf Farm (Cambridge) added certified organic Midnight Sun potatoes.

Yoke S Ranch (Russell) has their ground beef patties on sale for $6.00/lb (just in time for all of those tailgate parties this fall.

Riverview Berry Farms (West Bend) is back with their fresh-picked blackberries. We remember these from last summer – really nice, large berries – you won’t be disappointed.

From Charlie with Timberlea Farm (Boone): “We have an excellent aronia berry crop that we try to make them affordable ($8 for 5 lbs or $3.25/quart) so anyone can try them. They are often called the “superberry” because of their health benefits.”

From Ben with Wabi Sabi Farm (Des Moines): “I’ve listed the last of the Certified Organic Red Skinned Potatoes and added Certified Organic ‘German Butterball’ Potatoes, Certified Organic soft neck garlic (Inchellium) and Certified Organic hard neck garlic (Chesnok Red).”

New Family Farm (Elkhart) added Nicola and Sangre potatoes, Cory Family Farm (Elkhart) added Yukon Gold potatoes, and Wilted Leaf Farm (Cambridge) added Kennebec and “Magic Molly” blue potatoes – blue skin, blue flesh with (Jason says) an awesome taste. 

Country Roads Produce (Moravia) added sweet mini snack peppers and onions. Their tomatoes are slowing down and they didn’t list many snack peppers (they’re already all gone – sorry) because they aren’t sure how they’ll ripen. If it looks like they’ll have more, they’ll add them during the week.

From Julie with Zaza’s Pasta (Iowa City): “Just wanted to let you know that I’ve re-listed my products and all my dry pastas have a new LOWER price.”

Frisian Farms Cheese (Oskaloosa) added some new gouda cheeses – two sizes of a bacon gouda and one called “Frisian Farms Sneek” (aged 1,000 days – can’t wait to try it).

Namaste Gardens (Des Moines) added shallots and garlic and Bucumi Simon (Des Moines) added leeks and shallots.

Yoke S Ranch (Russell) has their New York Strip steak on sale for this cycle at $9.00/lb.

Sipma Farms (Mitchellville) added acorn squash.

Olson Family Farm (Madrid) added sweet corn (it’s really good).

Pickle Creek Herbal (Brighton) added garlic.

Heritage Hill Farm (Ames) added French Fingerling potatoes.

Matthew (Colfax) added four kinds of tomatoes and two kinds of sweet bell peppers (green and lime).

Harvest Moon Farms (St. Charles) added beets, fingerling potatoes, cherry tomatoes, and grape tomatoes.

Wabi Sabi Farm (Des Moines) added certified organic chocolate mint (a tasty addition to homemade ice cream or your favorite summertime adult drinks like mojitos) and certified organic red potatoes.

The Berry Patch Farm (Nevada) added three apple products: 5 lb bags of Paulared (an early tart apple that’s great for apple sauce) plus 3 and 10 lb bags of mixed early season apples (Williams Pride, Redfree, Paulared).

Ta Kaw Paw added three kinds of kale, red & white onions, and yellow & red potatoes.

Sky Heart Farm added red & white onions, yellow & red potatoes, basil, and garlic.

Eating Well Farm added Red Maria and Desiree potatoes, white onions, tongue of fire dry beans, and garlic.

Ta Kaw Htoo added red & white onions, okra, and roselle leaves.

Bucumi Simon added two varieties of beets, carrots, African eggplant, basil, parsley, garlic, amaranth greens, kale, red & white onions, green peppers, five varieties of potatoes, and cherry & red tomatoes.

Jipatie Afya added four varieties of potatoes, dry beans, beets, amaranth greens, African eggplant, and four varieties of tomatoes.

Good Shepard Grass Farms (Monroe) added beef bratwurst with cheese to their selection of hot dogs and brats (it’s grilling time!).

From Shanen with Ebersole Cattle Company (Kellerton): “We have a new harvest including Grass-Fed sirloin steaks and extra-lean Grass-Fed ground beef.”

Lucky George Farm (Derby) added some new and interesting products from their award-willing Large Black heritage breed herd including Canadian Bacon, Bratwurst, Lard, and Leaf Lard. They’ve also added rabbit summer sausage and Lucky George Farm t-shirts.

Yoke S Ranch (Russell) has their filet mignon (tenderloin) from their Corriente beef herd on sale this cycle.

Special K Ranch (Chariton) has some specials this cycle: 1) buy ten lbs of hamburger (product #4303) and get one free; 2) buy five pounds Beef Sticks and get one free, and 3) buy a chuck or sirloin roast and get a free package of liver.

7 Pines Farm (Maxwell) added a nice selection of lamb products including chops, Kabob meat, leg of lamb, stew meat.

From Lee with Lee’s Greens (Nevada): “We added sweet corn to go along with our herbs, micro greens, tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplant, summer squash, and new potatoes. We also have a selection of mints that are great in drinks (I really like the chocolate mint in lemonade).”

Sweet Rewards Gluten-Free Bakery (Waukee) listed for the first time last cycle, and for this cycle they’ve added Champagne & Chocolate Chip Cupcakes.

Iowa Orchard (Urbandale) listed tree-ripened Missouri peaches and The Berry Patch Farm (Nevada) listed blueberries.

Sunrise (Woodward) listed fresh-picked certified organic Aronia berries to go along with two varieties of garlic.

Wedel Grazing Acres (Riceville) is taking off this cycle. Kyle writes: “It’s been over a year since I’ve missed a day on the farm. Were headed to Alberta to see my wife’s family, then down into Idaho for a Wedel family reunion, camping at a campground along the Moyie River. Idaho is where I was born and lived until age of 12.”

Good Shepard Grass Farms (Monroe) added hot dogs and bratwurst and they’ve brought back summer sausage, beef sticks, and bologna.

Sipma Farms (Mitchellville) added family-sized bottles of their All-Natural Bug Repellent, Turkish Turban Squash, and two kinds of Goat’s Milk Soap (Peppermint and Coconut), cucumbers (Boston Pickling and Marketmore), and tomatoes (Salad Mix and Roma). 

Country Roads Produce (Moravia) added Jalapeno peppers to go along with their “cupcake” summer squash and tomatoes (red and yellow).

Lucky George Farm (Derby) added Iowa Chops from their Large Black heritage breed herd.

Global Greens farmers (refugees from around the world) continue to offer a wide selection of Certified Naturally Grown fresh produce items. New this cycle are German Butterball potatoes from Bucumi Simon, white onions and Thai long green beans from Ta Kaw Htoo, and red onions from Ta Kaw Paw.

From Cindy with Audubon County Family Farms: “We’ve listed smoked ham hocks. They are great with green beans. Our U-Pick aronia berries should be ready about mid-August depending on the weather.”

Reichart’s Dairy Air (Knoxville) is back for the first time since 2012 with their award-winning goat cheeses, including varieties like basil feta, chive chevre, and torta a stratti—a brie style cheese. Welcome back, Lois!

Sweet Rewards Gluten-Free Bakery (Waukee) is a new IFC producer that listed three products: Chocolate Frosted Fudge Brownies, Cinnamon Roll Bars, and Red Velvet & Chocolate Cupcakes. Members wanted more gluten-free products – here they are!

Iowa Orchard (Urbandale) was granted a variance again this year so they could offer tree-ripened Missouri peaches. They’ve also listed Lodi apples (an early season summer apple) to go along with their wide selection of baked goods.

The Berry Patch Farm (Nevada) listed blueberries and Red Currants.

Wildwood Farms (Wellsburg) is back after taking a couple cycles off (Lorna typically lists every other cycle) so stock up on soft pretzels, breakfast braids, baking mixes, and granola bars.

Heritage Hill Farm (Ames) listed rosemary transplants, Bright Lights swiss chard, cabbage, curly kale and potatoes.

Herbal Blis Soaps (Boone) has a new soap: “Sweet Corn Soap is made with concentrated sweet corn water from Grimes Sweet Corn and fine-ground corn meal for a bit of scrubby. The scent is a blend of essential oils that give it a sweet and complex aroma.” 

Sipma Farms (Mitchellville) listed for the first time last cycle. They’ve got handmade lotions and lip balms (made from goat milk from their own goats) and they’ve also added fresh herbs + green beans.

Country Roads Produce (Moravia), another of our new producers from last cycle, is offering boxes of yellow tomatoes (to go with their red) and ‘cupcake’ variety summer squash.

Lucky George Farm (Derby) has two new sausages: spicy and smokey Merguez (a mutton-based sausage popular in North Africa and Middle Eastern).

Lee’s Greens (Nevada) has black + red raspberries available along with their greenhouse tomatoes

Our nine Global Greens farmers (refugee farmers from around the world) continue to amaze with their incredible offerings (beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cilantro, parsley, green beans, amaranth greens, leaf and head lettuce, mustard, arugula, chard, greens mix, kale, squash stems, red and white onions, and potatoes). Please check them out!.

Grade A Gardens (Johnston) is offering some very unique items this cycle: garlic braids, wildcrafted black walnuts, and La Ratte fingerling potatoes.

Yoke S Ranch (Russell) has their Corriente sirloin roast on sale for $6/lb.

7 Pines Farm (Maxwell) listed a variety of chicken cuts + Berkshire pork raised on their Certified Organic farm.

New Family Farm (Elkhart) added many summer favorites, including zucchini, cucumbers, and green beans.

We have the secret to an amazing Fourth of July cookout: FRESH, LOCALLY-GROWN PRODUCE and locally-raised meat for the grill. New this cycle (see below for details) are Elephant Garlic, green beans, tomatoes, and there’s lots of snow/snap peas, head lettuce, carrots, and potatoes. Also, keep checking as produce farmers will update inventories throughout the week.

NOTE: We now have home delivery in the DM metro area. We’ve set up three home delivery products that are listed under the Iowa Food Cooperative. Deliveries will be from 6-9 pm on distribution Thursdays. If you want home delivery, choose “Franklin Plaza (Delivery)” as your Pickup/Delivery location when you open your shopping basket and put the appropriate product in your shopping cart. Summer is here! Lee’s Greens (Nevada) listed 2+ lb bags of mixed red and gold tomatoes and Clarion Sage Farm (Adel) listed high-tunnel heirloom tomatoes (small red vine-ripened tomatoes full of heirloom flavor).

Soy-free chickens have been requested by some members. This is from Mary of Cory Family Farm (Elkhart): “We are now offering pasture-raised chickens that have their diets supplemented with non-GMO grains and no soy. The average weight is 4.5 lb, and we are also listing packages of chicken livers and hearts from these chickens.”

Red Barn Produce (Dexter) added a summer favorite – fresh green beans! 

Heritage Hill Farm (Ames) has snow peas + snap peas in addition to several fresh-cut herbs + kohlrabi.

Tesdell Farm Fresh Produce (Slater) has returned with lamb chops—raised from birth on their farm–perfect for grilling.

Iowa Choice Harvest (Ames) put their frozen sliced apples on sale (perfect for combining with berries in smoothies as they are peeled, cored, sliced, and ready to use) and they’ve added cases of both their apples and their (amazing) sweet corn.

Sunrise (Woodward) is one of the few growers in the area to raise Elephant Garlic. Don’t miss out on these giant, segmented bulbs. They have a milder garlic flavor (shhhhh they are actually a leek) and are coveted by garlic-lovers everywhere.
