Dangood Gardens (from Johnston) is a new IFC producer offering 16 different heirloom tomato and pepper transplants.

From Jocelyn of Pickle Creek Herbal (from Brighton): “This is the last cycle we’ll have our herb, tomato, pepper, and eggplant seedlings available. We have lots of great ones left, but we’re starting to sell out. Also, we’ve added a few traditional medicinal herbs as well as a fun new culinary plant—Spicy Oregano!”

Threshing Floor (from Dallas Center) added turnips (2″ or more, good raw or cooked).

Raccoon Forks Farm (from Redfield) added fennel bulbs.

WW Homestead Dairy (from Waukon) added two new ice creams (White Chocolate Raspberry and Mint Cookies n’ Cream) to go along with their milks and cheeses, plus a limited supply of unsalted butter (“our butter supply is very low because this time of year we are making so much ice cream”). They may add some salted butter later this week.

From Amber of Good Shepherd Grass Farms (from Monroe): “For this cycle only we will be having a special on all steaks, 15% off for the 4th of July! Prices will reflect that discount.”

Yoke S Ranch (from Russell) has their Filet Mignon Steak on sale for $11.00/lb

Tesdell’s Farm Fresh Produce (from Elkhart) is back with ground lamb and lamb chops.

Twin Girls Gardens (from Madrid) is back as well with their gourmet jams and jellies.

Grade A Gardens (from Johnston) added new potatoes and fresh, uncured garlic.

7 Pines Farm (from Maxwell) added (limited quantities) of certified organic green beans, curly leaf kale, purple top turnips, and green peppers.

New Family Farm (from Elkhart) added two kinds of kale, two kinds of fresh basil, and purple top turnips.

From Ben of Wabi Sabi Farm (from Granger): “The transition between spring and summer crops has begun. I’ve listed Certified Organic Green Garlic and Marjoram Bunches, and I will probably add broccoli, cabbage, kohlrabi and possibly a few other items closer to the end of the ordering cycle.

Beaver Creek Collections (a mother-daughter team from Guthrie Center) added a “Hi Tunnel Winter Wonderland Kale Mix” and Red Barn Produce (from Dexter) has added potted Lemon Grass to go along with their green onions and rhubarb.

From Jocelyn at Pickle Creek Herbal (from Brighton): “Lots of things happening at Pickle! Our greenhouse is in full swing, and we still have lots of herb seedlings and a few pepper, eggplant, and tomato seedlings. We also have a brand new infused olive oil – Roasted Garlic (awesome for grilling veggies – think asparagus from Wabi Sabi Farm, Maxwell Farms, or SalAmander Farm) – and we’ve added a new herbal lip balm (Apple Chamomile) and two new soap and lip balms (Lime Mint and Lavender Mint)”.

7 Pines Farm (from Maxwell) added some beautiful Napa Cabbage as a new product, and they also have kale, green onions, and a wide variety of dip mixes, salsas, compound butters, and cream cheese spreads.

Wildwood Farms (from Wellsburg) is back (they are selling every other cycle) with two new kinds of nuts (Toffee Pecans and Garlic Chipotle Almonds), plus a new flavor (Chocolate Hazelnut) to their Breakfast Braid selections.

Fieldstone Farms (from Clemons) added Bug Off Insect Repellent (in a push-up stick form) and two new beeswax candles (Frog and Angel) to go along with their wide selection of lip balms, lotions, beeswax candles, and honey products.

Yoke S Ranch (from Russell) has their Corriente beef short ribs on sale for $4.50/lb.

Wimmer Farms (from Afton) is back and has listed three kinds of lettuce (Butterhead, Loose Leaf, and Romaine) along with two kinds of kale.

Grade A Gardens (from Johnston) has listed spring garlic, spinach, spring lettuce, and baby kale, and Raccoon Forks Farm (from Redfield) has listed two kinds spinach to go along with their eggs and broiler chickens.

Heart of Iowa Soapworks (from Gilbert) has brought back their Beer Shampoo, Unscented Laundry Soap, and Unscented Laundry Soap Bars.

Wagner Enterprises is taking this cycle off, and Sweet Treats without Wheat will be taking off the entire farmer’s market season (I guess I’ll need to visit them at the downtown Farmers Market to get my cheesecake in a jar).

SalAmander Farm (from Bondurant) added asparagus, rhubarb, and basil plants, and Panther Creek Asparagus (from Minburn) also added asparagus.

Broadhorn Farm (from Truro) has two beef products from their Belted Galloway herd on sale: Short Ribs (regularly $6.78/lb, now $5.59) and Round Steak (regularly $9.23/package, now $8.88). Julie writes: “We loved talking to our customers at the Downtown Des Moines Farmers Market last weekend and we’ll be there again on May 24th!!! Come out for a visit and pick up a Broadhorn Farm T-Shirt.”

The Threshing Floor has unlisted their baked goods because of well-deserved vacation. They plan to relist the 2nd cycle of June.

Wabi Sabi Farm (from near Granger) added 42 certified organic transplants, including 14 tomato varieties, 9 sweet/hot pepper varieties, and various herbs, onions, scallions, Swiss chard, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and broccoli. 

Lee’s Greens (from near Nevada) listed five kinds of tomato transplants and Victoria rhubarb transplants. They’ve also got potted herbs (sweet basil, chives, curled and plain leaf parsley) and several fresh produce items (mixed turnips, swiss chard, lettuce mix).

Pickle Creek Herbal (from near Brighton) listed certified organic Joe’s Long Cayanne hot pepper transplants and a bunch of certified organic herb transplants (basil, sage, thyme, mint, oregano, parsley, chives, and cutting celery). They also have herb-infused olive oils & vinegars, plus herbal soaps, salves & lip balms.

Raccoon Forks Farm (from near Redfield) has listed bagged spinach, plus they’ve got eggs and their broiler special is still on ($10/chicken, and the normal prices is $3.50/lb, so this offer makes these 4 to 5 lb chickens a real bargain).

Griffieon Family Farm (from near Ankeny) added two new lamb products: Loin Frenched Rack (a single rack that includes 11 ribs) and Frenched Rib Chops ( added two lamb products: Loin Frenched Rack (three chops per package).

Heart of Iowa Soapworks (from Gilbert) added “Resin in the Woods” soap, which is a demo batch from one of Karla’s soapmaking classes. Frankincense & Myrrh with a touch of Sandalwood, it’s “very subtle, not overpowering, more like a light cologne fragrance.”

Broadhorn Farm (from near Truro) added a new product – Petite Shoulder Tenders – from their Belted Galloway herd.

Iowa Pet Adoptions has stopped making their pet treats. We know there are many of you who were loyal customers. Erich indicated that the treats were a fundraiser project that was never intended to last forever, and he says thank you to everyone who bought them.

Matt from Holdeman ABF Poultry (from near Riceville) writes “As many of you many have noticed, our inventory is getting low on our capons. This is due to our processor closing its doors. We have been working to locate a different processor and have succeeded. We are scheduled to process our current flock of birds on May 5th. Shortly after this I will have increased inventory on certain products. Sorry for any hassles this may have caused”.

7 Pines Farm (from near Maxwell) has added a cream cheese spreads in a variety of flavors (Bacon Onion, Cucumber Dill, Garlic Herb, Spinach, Sun Dried Tomato Basil, Veggie) to go along with their compound butters and cheese logs. They have also added certified organic Basil and Thyme plants.

Zaza’s Pasta (from North Liberty near Iowa City) added three kinds of Orecchiette pasta (Orecchiette means “little ears” in Italian, and this pasta looks exactly like that), plus three kinds or Pappardelle pasta (a wide, flat noodle perfect with a nice meaty ragu). Also, Ebert Honey Company has been with the IFC since we started in 2008, but they will no longer sell products through us. As their business has grown, they’ve begun purchasing honey and beeswax to meet demand. The problem is that we have a policy that producers can’t buy and resell products unless we grant a variance, and these are only granted when the products are not available from other IFC producers. This isn’t the case with honey and beeswax.

We sincerely thank Phil and his family for being a solid producer for the IFC all these years, as well as for his understanding of the importance of following our policies on who can sell what. You can purchase their products in most Des Moines-area Hy-Vee and Dahls stores as well as New City Market. Their beeswax is available through the shopping cart on their website (www.eberthoney.com).

7 Pines Farm has started making three types of compound butter (butter mixed with seasonings to add flavor): Sun-Dried Tomato, Honey Cinnamon, and Garlic. They also make three kinds of cheese logs (cream cheese mixed with seasoning and formed into a log for easy slicing): Bacon Onion, Garlic Herb, and Veggie.

Lee’s Greens added potted sweet basil and parsley (curled and plain-leaf). They’ve only listed swiss chard at the moment, but they’ll probably add other greens later in the ordering period. Part of the issue is this (darn) cold weather, but they are also beginning to convert their greenhouses to other crops – tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, summer squash, head lettuces, cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli. They are hoping for tomatoes by May. Can hardly wait.

Broadhorn Farm took last cycle off (new grandson!), but they are back with these sales on grass-fed beef products from their Belted Galloway herd: 1) ribeye steaks (was $15.98/lb, now $12.99/lb); 2) round steak (was $8.89/lb, now $7.69/lb); and 3) a “Super Supper Sale” that includes 3 roasts, 3 rounds steaks, 3 short ribs, 3 crosscut shanks, and 6 minute steaks (approximately 25 lbs @ $6/lb – a great value).

Audubon County Family Farms is back as well. They’ve listed quarter, half, and whole beef from their Registered Lowline Black Angus beef herd. Their smaller size make them “more suited to modern American families, your freezers, your healthier eating habits, and your pocketbooks”. These will be direct sales between you and the producer, but it’s an excellent way to stock up on beef for the summer. You’ll want to call soon (712-563-3044) to make arrangements.

From Bryan with Iowa Orchard: “Due to the heavy apple crop this season, we are giving away pint samples of apple cider to anyone who orders ANYTHING to promote the fact that we’ll have apples and cider until probably June.”

Zaza’s Pasta listed two new products: 1) Lemony-Artichoke Ravioli in Spinach Pasta (a new vegan flavor) and 2) Sun-Dried Tomato & Pistachio Pesto (made with organic sun-dried tomatoes; use as a topping on their Crostini breads or as a sauce for their Pastas).

Country View Dairy added 3 lb tubs of their Plain Greek yogurt. Now those of you who were buying several of the smaller tubs can get what you want and save money at the same time! 

Fieldstone Farms added two sizes of their popular Love Spell Natural Lotion (fortified with replenishing butters, hydrated honey, and avocado & sweet almond oils), plus scented, unscented and French vanilla versions of their Love Spell Natural Moisturizing Hand Cream.

Al Dente Toffee added a Maple Bacon Waffle Toffee (loaded with bacon and topped with a maple cream coating; Who doesn’t like bacon with maple syrup?) and a “Be Mine” Edition Toffee (their Classic Almond with red, pink, and white hearts added).

Yoke S Ranch has their Corriente beef sticks on sale for $10/lb and Wild Rose Pastures added Grass-Fed Lamb Stew Meat.

1. Tony is a Des Moines native and his small business produces very high quality salmon products using sustainable practices,
2. our consumer members want greater selection of unique, sustainably-produced products,
3. no fish products from Iowa are currently listed, and
4. almost all locally-available salmon is “factory” farm-raised (extremely harmful to the environment and coastal communities; click this link for more info).

In a few months we’ll ask for feedback on our decision to allow a product from outside Iowa to be sold. In the meantime, please give his products a try. He currently has four listed.

Shallots Anyone? The board recently discussed ways to make products in short supply available to IFC members. One idea is for the IFC to purchase for re-sale items that are 1) not available, 2) desirable in terms of attributes, such as certified organic, and 3) produced by small farms or businesses. We’ve made our first such purchase: certified organic shallots from Small Family CSA Farm (a 21-acre certified organic farm in SW WI). These shallots will be listed until the supply we purchased is gone.

Other new or updated items:

Sweet Treat without Wheat added Pumpkin Donuts with citrus glaze, and their donuts now come in half-dozen packs.

Grimm Family Farm added beets from last fall’s harvest that they’ve been storing in their walk-in cooler.

Huber Family Farm added inventory to their Red Lasoda potatoes (the carrots, unfortunately, are all gone).

Sunrise added dwarf-gray pea shoots (in 4.5″ pots) and live green garlic (10 plants/pot).

Special K Ranch lowered the price on their Grass-fed Texas Longhorn hamburger to $4.50 per pound.

From Matt at Holdeman ABF Poultry: “I hope the new year finds everyone well and healthy. We’ve been working on some new products that are now listed: whole smoked capon, whole smoked capon breasts, and boneless skinless breast sliced into deli meat. I have a limited number to start with, so hurry and get your orders in.” 

Daily Bread Bakery added a medium salsa that is “handmade in small batches and loaded with fresh organic and local produce.” 

Griffieon Family Farm added two new products: un-rendered lard and suet. LaVon also notes that “it is soup and stew season, so we’ve reduced the price on boiling beef.” They’ve also reduced the price on t-bone steaks and dog bones. 

Wagner Enterprises added two new items: Black Raspberry Crisp and Apple Crisp (both in 8″x8″ and 4″ pie sizes).

Fieldstone Farms added an the option of customizing their lip balm set gift baskets (perfect for a Valentine gift for your special “honey”).customized.two new items: corn polenta and buckwheat flour.

Broadhorn Farm added beef liver and beef soup bones from their Belted Galloway herd.
